University of California also known as Cal, University of California, UC Berkeley, UCB, or simply Berkeley is a public co-educational institution located in Berkeley, California, east of the San Francisco Bay. It is the headquarters and the oldest of the campuses of the University of California, as well as being the most prestigious. History

In 1866 the property on which the university is located was purchased by Henry Durant in his goal of building a private school. It opened in Oakland in 1868, and moved to its current site five years later, following the construction of the first campus buildings, which at that time had a student body of 167 men and 222 women.
