California Institute of Technology

California Institute of Technology, USA known worldwide as Caltech, this institution that welcomes only a little more than 2,000 students has an enormous prestige based, among other reasons, on its impressive harvest of 31 Nobel prizes won by professors and alumni. Among its facilities is the NASA rocket propulsion laboratory.

History

Caltech is the California Institute of Technology located in Pasadena, California, Los Angeles area. Also defined as an elite private university that focuses its higher education in the area of Science and engineering.

California Institute of Technology has an advantageous and solid cooperation with NASA, which has allowed it to participate in exploration of different planets and calculate the changes of our planet Earth by sending probes into space.

Inventions and intellectual property make Caltech have an immense effect on society, such as: the microwave oven engine, the CMOS camera found in Cell Phones, The Da Vinci robot for medical operations, the DNA sequencer that has revolutionized medicine and many more.

Why study at the California Institute of Technology 2021?

The California Institute of Technology, abbreviated Caltech, is a recognized University specializing in teaching and research in the fields of Science and technology. It is considered one of the best universities in the world and despite its small size-such has only 2,000 students – it has passed up to 34 Nobel Prizes. It has one teacher every three students, so the quality of teaching is guaranteed.

Caltech’s origins date back to 1891 when philanthropist Amos Throop created Throop University. This institution attracted prestigious scientists who decided to expand it and rename it the California Institute of Technology. Among the achievements of the university stands out the discovery of vitamin C, by researcher Linus Pauling in 1930. In the field of Geophysics, the discovery of one of his famous students, Charles Richter, creator of the scale to measure the intensity of earthquakes, also stands out.

Currently, the institution controls and directs NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory that supports the Spitzer telescope. It also has other prestigious scientific centers such as the Seismological Laboratory, The Palomar Observatory or the W. M. Keck Observatory.

Its main campus has 50 hectares and students of multiple nationalities coexist in mutual respect. In it was recorded an episode of the Big Bang Theory because it is the university that the characters of the famous series go to. But this has not been his only television appearance, scenes from Dossier X and Mission Impossible were also recorded on it.

Cost 2021

The tuition fee for international students for one academic year (9 months) is USD 54,570 USD. To study at Caltech you must have a minimum budget of anual 84,200 USD per year to cover basic needs. This is the list of estimated costs:

SPENDINGPRICE (USD)
Room in university housing$11.300
feeding$9.500
Personal expenses$2.600
License plate$ 54.570

TOTAL $84.200

Costs vary depending on the lifestyle of each student.

To be taken into account:

The one-time orientation fee is $500 and is for students entering any undergraduate program for the first time, in addition to the mandatory applicable fees.
A travel allowance may be added to offset the cost of two trips (round trip) from the student’s country of residence but does not apply for citizens residing in the United States.

Scholarship

The California Institute of technology does not have merit scholarship programs, but it does offer grants, which are financial supports (grants) that do not have to be earned or paid.

New undergraduates will only have to fill out a special application for financial aid alongside their admission process and will automatically be applicants for Caltech and federal government grants.

Work and study

All students can apply in the Work-Study program that allows to have an income for personal expenses through a job even without leaving the campus. Students applying for a financial aid (grant) will automatically apply for the job opportunity. Students in the program commonly receive a salary of USD 2,500 USD per year, freshmen are not allowed to work during the fall period so will receive USD 1,350 USD.

Sheldon Cooper Works as a theoretical physicist, Leonard Hofstadter as an experimental physicist, Raj Koothrapali is an astrophysical researcher and Howard Wolowitz is an engineer in charge of the aerospace engineering area of NASA that controls the University.

  • In the game Half-Life: Decay, Dr. Gina Cross and Dr. Green graduated from this institute.
  • In the film Tron: Legacy, Sam Flynn attended CalTech but did not finish his studies, however his father Kevin Flynn did, even describing it as his “Alma mater”.
  • In the series” Criminal Minds”, genius Dr. Spencer Reid did his three PhDs in mathematics, chemistry and engineering at Cal Tech. He also mentions that he can get his godson in there with just one call.
